“Do something today that your future self will thank you for.” ―Sean Patrick Flanery
My nephew Pedro and I are reading the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams together. It’s one of his favorites, and I’m reading it for the first time. I am enjoying sharing this experience with him. Once when we were talking, Pedro told me that many years ago he was in a bookstore and found a beautifully embossed, leather-bound copy of the complete series. Because the books had meant a lot to him, he decided to splurge and buy that handsome edition, even though he’d just finished the series.
Now, many years later, as we’re reading this together, he told me how much he’s relishing this wonderful edition he bought long ago. It occurred to him that, in making that purchase, his past self gave his present self a gift.
That got me thinking about the things we can do in the present for the benefit of our future selves. Just as buying ourselves something that we’ll enjoy in years to come, we can do things now that will benefit our future lives.
So here are five simple steps you can take to give gifts to your future self, too.
