How to Reframe Issues as Blessings

Do you sometimes feel like issues that come up keep you from moving forward?

I was recently talking with a good friend of mine who runs her own business, and we got on the subject of how easy it is to get bogged down by life’s challenges—especially when we’re busy in our work. Of course, things ultimately work out the way they’re supposed to. But when we see the blessings within the issues we are experiencing, we move through them with greater ease and less upset.

It’s easy to think of difficult situations as things to be avoided. Yet the truth is that issues rarely go away all by themselves.

But, what if we see issues as part of life’s journey? Little (or not so little) lessons that are there just for us?

Viewed in this way, when issues arise and we look for the blessing, our perspective shifts, allowing us to change course and problem solve.

In today’s post, we’re looking at how seeking out blessings (when we’re in the thick of it) supports us in shifting how we respond to issues.

Reframing issues is all about perspective

It’s not about seeing everything through “rose colored glasses,” but about seeing things as they are—and at the same time intentionally looking for the lessons and opportunities hidden within every problem. In this way, our perspective about what’s happening changes, giving us more options in how to respond.

Let’s face it—stuff happens. Everything from small, annoying things like dealing with a mix up with your account at your bank, to larger things like a great employee leaving with little notice. It’s how we choose to respond that makes the difference in dealing with challenges.

Reframing issues into blessings is one of the best ways to move beyond stress into creative problem solving. So when an issue arises, take a moment and ask yourself, “What lessons and opportunities are in this for me?”

This questions can change your attitude from resistance to resourcefulness.

Pay attention to what you’re experiencing

Reframing issues is about viewing them through a different lens. Perspectives can change. Things that seem challenging, when reframed, often lose their charge. Try this out with an issue you’re facing, and notice how it feels when you start looking for the hidden opportunities in life’s challenges. Odds are you’ll feel much more calm.

If a situation arises where we can’t see our way to the blessing, just acknowledging where we are will move us through the problem with greater ease. The key is to stay open. The blessing will show up.

Cultivate blessings in your life

Be mindful of blessings around you everyday, and you’ll find it easier to reframe issues when the going gets tough.

Seeing blessings in our work, family, friendships—and simply in being alive—promotes gratitude at the core level. And with a little practice finding the blessings in life’s challenges becomes second nature.

The benefit to approaching issues this way is less stress, the ability to reach a solution, and the strength to let go and move on.

The most amazing part is, the more we practice this, the fewer things really bother us. It’s not that stuff doesn’t happen, it’s how it affects us that changes. We truly start to see the positive in the what’s going on in our lives. Less energy is expended on being upset. Instead, the focus becomes feeling at peace with what is, and seeing what blessings are available to us.
