“I am open to the guidance of synchronicity, and do not let expectations hinder my path.” —Dalai Lama
When synchronicity is in play in our lives, it indicates that things are coming together in a way that is joyful, fun, and life-affirming. Though seemingly random, synchronicity moves you toward your goals. And the more you cultivate it, the more it shows up.
Carl Jung first identified synchronicity as “an acasual connecting principle . . . a meaningful coincidence of two or more events, where something other than probability of chance is involved.” Deepak Chopra describes synchronicity as “a conspiracy of probabilities that come together.”
However you relate to synchronicity in your life, it often comes about when you’ve set an intention for something you want to create, or when you’re actively engaged in taking action to achieve your goal.
In this post we’ll share some examples of synchronicity and ways to cultivate it so that you can create more of what you want in your life and work.
1. Set Intention
At the Extraordinary Businesswoman, we talk a lot about the power of setting intention to create what you want in your life. Setting intention tells the universe you mean business. Synchronicity is one of the manifestations of setting intention, because when you set an intention, seemingly unconnected things happen to move you on your way.
Here’s one example.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about taking a vacation. It’s been awhile since I’ve had one that was several weeks long, so I set the intention for time off and began planning an international trip 6 months from now. Here’s the amazing part. Since that intention, other vacation opportunities have shown up, from a long weekend with a friend in Monterey, to an invitation to Puerto Vallarta.
Maybe. But I see it as synchronicity. Life showing up to meet the intention I set.
2. Focus on What You Want to Achieve
Whether or not you have a big goal you want o fulfill, when you focus on whatever actions are there for you to take, you’ll find that synchronicity will show up to support you.
My nephew, Steven, is 16 years old. Since he was a little kid, he’s wanted to be a pilot. He’s learned all he can through books, he has a flight simulator on his computer, and every summer for the last couple of years he’s worked with a company that flies glider planes. In other words, he’s done everything he can to move toward his goal.
A few months ago, his father randomly connected with a grade school friend on Facebook. Well, it turns out that this friend, whom my brother hasn’t heard from in 40 years, owns a flight school. When he learned about Steven wanting to be a pilot, he offered my bother an amazing deal. Long story short, Steven started flight school, is flying solo, and should have his pilot’s license when he turns 17 in less than a month.
When you’re actively taking action, synchronicity will show up in random ways to move you toward your goal.
3. Let Limitations Go
Another way to cultivate synchronicity is to consciously let go of limitations and expectations. In other words, rather than holding onto old beliefs, or thinking that things should go a certain way, envision yourself simply meeting your goal. Don’t worry about how you’ll get there, what’s happened in the past, or what could happen in the future. Trust that what you need will appear at the right time.
Synchronicity flourishes when you’re open to possibilities in the moment. When you believe that anything is possible—the random meeting, phone call, or introduction to someone new, you’ll see synchronicity popping up all over the place.
Before I set the intention to take time off, I spent several years with the mindset that I shouldn’t take a long vacation. As soon as I let that go and decided to take time off, synchronicity started happening. Now I have 3 trips coming up! My nephew has been so focused on his dream of becoming a pilot, that even at the young age of 16, synchronicity has shown up and given him a way.
The Best Part About Synchronicity
Synchronicity isn’t something you have to learn to attract. All you have to do is be aware, and notice the coincidences as they happen. Be present with what is, yet conscious of the direction you wish to go in, and synchronicity will happen. And the more you become aware of it, the more you’ll see it appearing in countess ways to move you toward your intention, your goal, and your dreams.
